JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Director of Ecumenical Mission

Accountable to: The Board of Trustees of the Milton Keynes Mission Partnership through the Chair
Based at: The Office of the Mission Partnership, located at the Christian Foundation in Wolverton
 
Purpose: To bring the churches of Milton Keynes together in Ecumenical Mission
To take a lead in the development of Ecumenical Mission
To help the churches of Milton Keynes connect with the wider community
To manage the Milton Keynes Mission Partnership as an organisation
 
Responsibilities:
a) To encourage unity: The Director of Ecumenical Mission will bring together churches and church leaders so that they can work together. This will be achieved by the encouragement and leading of shared theological reflection through individual conversations, meetings, speaking engagements and preaching. The Director of Ecumenical Mission will:
   i. Work with the congregations and individuals that belong to the Mission Partnership
   ii. Reach out to churches and congregations currently outside the Mission Partnership
   iii. Build positive relationships with other church networks in Milton Keynes, including those of independent and black-led churches
   iv. Develop strong links with Christian denominations and ecumenical organisations beyond Milton Keynes
b) To promote mission: The Director of Ecumenical Mission will work with the churches of Milton Keynes to develop their understanding of ecumenical mission and to nurture joint activity. The Director of Mission will:
   i. Encourage and resource theological reflection and vision on ecumenical mission and theology
   ii. Work with the Mission Partnership to produce, implement and review an on-going mission strategy
   iii. Teach or speak on the subject of mission, particularly from an ecumenical perspective
   iv. Work with local churches to develop their own mission in partnership with other churches or institutions
c) To represent the Church: The Director of Ecumenical Mission will be an advocate for the churches of the Mission Partnership (and others when appropriate) to the institutions and wider community of Milton Keynes. The Director of
 
Ecumenical Mission will:
   i. Seek to be an authentic and informed advocate for the churches and denominations which belong to the Mission Partnership
   ii. Engage with the civic, business and voluntary communities of Milton Keynes and nurture relationships between the churches and the wider community
   iii. Speak on behalf of the Mission Partnership or the churches when appropriate
   iv. Support those involved in chaplaincy to the institutions of Milton Keynes (e.g. Hospital, Prison, Police Service, Secure Training Centre, etc...) and to coordinate an ecumenical response to new opportunities
d) To manage the Mission Partnership: The Director of Ecumenical Mission will be responsible for the day-to-day management and the leadership of the Mission Partnership as an organization. The Director of Ecumenical Mission will:
   i. Help the Mission Partnership to develop and implement strategies for mission
   ii. Manage the office and staff of the Mission Partnership, dealing with routine work and responding to crises
   iii. Play a role in the administrative and formal structures of the Mission Partnership as defined by the Standing Orders
   iv. Coordinate the project groups of the Mission Partnership (e.g. Homelessness, Fresh Expressions, Training, etc...)
 
Key Relationships:
The Director of Ecumenical Mission will:
1. Report to the Trustees of the Mission Partnership through the Chair.
2. Have an individual meeting with the lead president at least three times each year.
3. Have a Support Group which will meet at least three times each year to listen to the concerns and reflections of the Director of Ecumenical Mission and consider how the post may be supported or developed. This group will maintain confidentiality but will report to the trustees with the consent of the Director of Ecumenical Mission.
4. With reference to the Mission Partnership structures::
   a) Be an Officer in Attendance to the Board of Trustees
   b) Be Chair of the Mission Partnership Coordinating Group which oversees and coordinates the day-to-day implementation of the Mission Strategy
   c) Be a Member of the Mission Strategy Group which works to develop the Mission Strategy of the Partnership.
5. With reference to the oversight of Local Ecumenical Partnerships and Churches Together Groups, attend meetings of the Sponsoring Network.
 
Appointment:
1. The post will be full-time and the appointment will be made according to the full time employment practices of the denomination to which the Director of Ecumenical Mission belongs.
2. The Director of Ecumenical Mission will be recognised by the participating denominations and invited to attend local, area and regional meetings. Specifically, the Director of Ecumenical Mission will have an open invitation to attend the area meetings of the participating denominations.
3. An annual professional development review will be carried out by the Chair of the Board of Trustees.
4. A review of the post will be carried out after five years.
5. There will be office support of 16 hours a week.
 
PERSON SPECIFICATIONS:
Characteristics: The Director of Mission will be self-motivated, passionate about ecumenical mission as defined by the five marks of mission He or she will have highly developed organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, the vision and ability to inspire and manage others, a commitment to collaborative leadership, and skills in theological reflection.
Church Experience: The Director of Mission will be an ordained minister from a denomination which belongs to Churches Together in England. That person will have significant experience in leadership beyond the local congregation and will be expected to work alongside senior denominational leaders. He or she will be able to work with Christians from a broad range of theological and denominational backgrounds.
Qualifications: The Director of Mission will have a qualification at degree level or above, experience in church leadership, and practical experience in ecumenical mission.
Computer Skills: The Director of Mission must be competent with and willing to use MS Office, the internet and email.
Transport: The Director of Mission must have independent means of transport.
Children and Vulnerable Adults: The Director of Mission will be required to undertake an enhanced CRB check.
